Lifeboat Release Hook Inspection and Testing: What Operators Should Check
Lifeboat release-gear inspection begins with identification: the boat, launching appliance and release system must be matched to the correct manuals and service records. A generic hook checklist cannot establish whether a particular installation is ready for service.
The useful distinction is between routine crew observations and examination, testing or repair by appropriately qualified personnel. This article explains the records and questions involved; it is not a release-test procedure.
Start with the installed system, not a similar photograph
A part number, serial number and manual revision connect the visible mechanism to its approved instructions. A replacement component that resembles the original may still differ in its permitted installation or adjustment. If the records and fitted equipment disagree, the discrepancy should be resolved through the responsible service organization before a readiness decision.

What the IMO framework contributes
IMO publishes guidance on lifeboat accidents and the maintenance and servicing framework associated with MSC.402(96). The framework includes manufacturer documentation, records and service-provider responsibilities. Apply the version and amendments relevant to the vessel through its flag, class and responsible service provider. Marine product coverage is not lifeboat approval
A manufacturer may supply industrial hooks for marine work without supplying approved lifeboat release gear for your boat. Do not treat a marine category page, a photograph or a nominal load rating as proof of lifeboat compatibility. Ask for installation-specific approval evidence and documentation before drawing that conclusion.
